Listening To The Wind

“Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,

we have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!"

Humbert Wolfe

All Hallows Eve is almost here! Halloween is my favorite holiday. Not as much for the spooky stuff – I live in a 130+ year old home that already makes strange noises in the night, so I don’t need any more supernatural experiences, thank you very much – but because of the season. I try to enjoy every day of October, because this month seems to go all in. October gives everything of herself, with amazing color, incredibly bright blue skies, warm days, brilliant nights, funky pumpkins, the last dahlias, and of course candy, before turning inwards.

I’m lucky to live near a trail, so the beauty of autumn can be very distracting this time of year! I find that a lot of my inspiration for the coming year begins in October. Earlier in the month I went for a walk, and the wind was rustling in the trees. All of a sudden I heard the phrase, “What the wind whispers…”  I haven’t forgotten that phrase, and in fact, that is going to be the theme of my next body of work.

Wind has been an important player in fairy tales and folklore, so I will need to do some reading and researching! I am not sure where this will take me. I am always a little nervous when I start a new body of work, but I will do my best to listen carefully to the wind.
